Arcilla exacts sweet revenge over Barte to take Bernales Cup

Months ago, in May 2008, a hamstring injury-plagued Johnny Arcilla was booted out during his Cebuana Lhuillier quarterfinal match by a 19-year old Manila-based Davao City player, Ralph Kevin Barte.  This time, January 2009, he exacted sweet revenge over Barte to rule the 2009 Mayor Eutiquio Bernales Cup National Open Tennis Tournament in Ubay, Bohol.

Tournament top-seed Arcilla of Manila, who recently regained his PCA crown in November 2008, stamped his dominance over the second-seed Barte, 6-3, 6-3, after overcoming third-seed Elbert Anasta in the semifinal round.  For his part, Barte, former Palarong Pambansa gold medal winner, reached the finals with a walkover against ailing Cagayan de Oro player Danny Sajunia.

The Bernales Cup run from January 21 to 25 and offered a total pot of P50,000. Champion Arcilla received P20,000, while runner-up Barte took P10,000.  Besides the cash prizes, trophies were awarded to the winners after the Arcilla-Barte finals match by Mayor Eutiquio Bernales Sr. (shown in photo at left, speaking), who was assisted by Ubay Tennis Club president Ernesto Uy and PHILTA president Julito Villanueva.

The town of Ubay extended its hospitality to out-of-town players, who were given free housing and food during the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA)-sanctioned tournament, which had as lead organizer Tngardz Uy, "a dynamic and well-organized tennis patron" in the words of PHILTA Region VII RVP John Pages.

The netfest was also graced by the presence of PHILTA Region XI RVP Juanito "Titong" Cansino, as well as leading tennis personality Tom Falcis (shown in photo at left, writing), who conducted the draw and gave a briefing to coaches and participants.

Davao City's top netters El Santo "Jok-Jok" Santos and Mark Anthony "Mac-Mac" Alcoseba, varsity mainstays from Brokenshire College, also competed in the Bohol netfest.

Ubay, a municipality in the province of Bohol, is the hometown of PHILTA President Julito "Lito" Villanueva.
